James Murphy Live at 12 Years of DFA Records

James Murphy is the grand seigneur in the modern day and age of what used to be the downtown Manhattan scene. Taking the torch from Talking Heads’ David Byrne and running with it, Murphy almost singlehandedly brought back the cultural exchange between indie and dance music with hisLCD Soundsystem, the attached DFA label and cult singles like Losing My Edge or The Rapture’s House Of Jealous Lovers. Stemming from Princeton Junction, New Jersey, and graced with a background as a live and studio engineer (“recording bands on my 4-track for sandwiches”) after a lifetime of starring in various bands himself, James always found time to balance producing, recording, engineering and performing. As the leading man and lyricist of his musical project LCD Soundsystem, he has celebrated two Grammy nominations (for their self-titled debut LP and the classic Daft Punk Is Playing At My House) and received fantastic critical acclaim for their second album, Sound Of Silver. With LCD’s third album This Is Happening, Murphy announced the band’s retirement in 2010. Prior to that, Murphy went into film scoring for Noah Baumbach’s ‘Greenberg’ and established a name for himself as a DJ. A purveyor of disco and old school rooted house music, James Murphy seems not to be bored of the dynamics of nightclubs and is even developing his own DJ rotary mixer.
